Key Terminologies

Here is a quick breakdown of key payout terminologies designed for new investors:

  • Cash Dividend: Actual cash money paid by a company directly to its shareholders out of its profits. It’s usually expressed as a percentage of the share’s face value or a fixed rupee amount per share.
  • Bonus Shares: Extra free shares given to existing shareholders instead of cash payout. If a company issues a 10% bonus, you receive 1 extra share for every 10 shares you already own.
  • Right Shares: An offer giving existing shareholders the option to buy additional new shares of the company, often at a discounted price, before they are offered to the public.
  • Book Closure Date: The cutoff period during which a company freezes its register of shareholders to determine who is eligible for the dividend. You must own the shares before this date to receive the payout.
  • Entitlement Date (Ex-Dividend Date): The date starting from which a share trades without its upcoming dividend or bonus entitlement. If you buy shares on or after this date, you won’t get the recently announced payout.
  • Period (Final / Interim):
    • Interim Dividend: A payout declared and paid during the financial year before full-year results are finalized.
    • Final Dividend: A payout declared at the end of the financial year alongside the company’s full-year financial results.
